Reflection on the 17th Sunday of Ordinary Time

READINGS AND HEADINGS:

2 Kings 4:42-44They will eat and have some left over

Psalm 144You open wide your hand, O Lord, and grant our desires

Ephesians 4: 1-6One Body, one Lord, one Faith, one Baptism.

John 6: 1-15Jesus gave out as much as was wanted to all who were sitting ready

REFLECTION:

Whenever we read in our liturgy about the Prophets, Patriarchs and Christ Himself feeding the people our minds are turned immediately to the Eucharist – and rightly so. The Church

deliberately makes that connection and expects us to meditate upon it. However, it is not the only thing the Church is asking us to consider: we are asked to consider what we are doing to feed the hungry in our world? The Eucharist goes hand in hand with a commitment to feeding the hungry – service as was shown by Our Lord washing His Disciples’ feet at the Last Supper. We can’t receive one without acting upon the other.
